Frontier Airlines, an ultra-low cost American airline, celebrated the return of a unique new aircraft today featuring Tico the Costa Rican two-toed sloth on its tail. Team Frontier members were present at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to greet the aircraft as it touched down.
Each Frontier plane tail showcases a distinct animal with a special name and background story. The Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth was selected to honour Costa Rica, a Frontier destination partner, and to draw attention to this rare species that is native to the country. From Atlanta, Frontier Airlines offers nonstop service to San Jose.
“We are very excited to partner with the Costa Rican tourism industry to showcase our new aircraft honouring the beloved two-toed sloth. We know how important this animal is to people across Costa Rica! Highlighting Tico in this special way shows our fondness for Costa Rica and its national symbol. Frontier is known for its commitment to the environment and its efforts to raise awareness for various species of animals across the Americas, many of which are endangered.”
Tyri Squyres, VP of Marketing at Frontier Airlines.

Customers were encouraged to vote on the name of the animal tail via Frontier’s social media channels in 2022 as part of a partnership with Visit Costa Rica. Customers selected one of three names. with the name Tico, a term used to describe Costa Rican locals, winning the majority.

The two-toed sloth is the larger of the two sloth species that may be found in Costa Rica, with sloths being regarded as the country’s national symbol. They are primarily nocturnal and easily identified by their shaggy coats, brown snouts, and white ringed faces. Sloths are long-lived animals that can reach 30 years of age, spending 90% of their life upside down in the trees of rainforests. Costa Rica is taking action to guarantee that these rare animals survive and prosper in their natural environment.
