Lloyd’s Register (LR) has joined the LOWNOISER project, a €6.3 million EU-backed initiative aimed at tackling underwater noise pollution caused by maritime activity.
Bringing together 15 partners, the project seeks to develop advanced noise-reduction technologies, establish industry standards, and promote sustainable practices to protect marine ecosystems.
Ship-generated noise is a leading contributor to underwater noise pollution, disrupting marine life such as fish, whales, and invertebrates that rely on sound for communication, navigation, and survival. Recognising this growing concern, the European Commission’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive mandates that 80% of target species’ habitats remain free from biologically harmful noise levels.
Over the next four years, LOWNOISER will deliver practical, long-term solutions for reducing underwater noise, applicable to both new and existing vessels. Technologies under development include air lubrication systems, low-noise bevel gears, engine mounts, onboard monitoring systems, and distributed acoustic sensing, all designed to minimise acoustic impact while maintaining operational efficiency.
Five full-scale demonstrations—including the Montesperanza oil tanker (Ibaizabal) and the Roald Amundsen cruise ship (HX Hurtigruten Expedition)—will validate these innovations, assessing their effectiveness in real-world marine environments.

Leading Work Package 7, LR will focus on regulatory frameworks and industry guidelines to support policymakers, authorities, and stakeholders in implementing noise-reduction measures. Additionally, LR will contribute to analytical and numerical modelling, helping to evaluate the effectiveness of tested noise mitigation technologies.
