Kongsberg Maritime ASA has announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Swedish propulsion specialist Berg Propulsion AB in a move that will expand its capabilities across the marine propulsion market. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Kongsberg Maritime’s existing propulsion portfolio while broadening its reach across additional vessel types and customer segments.
Berg Propulsion has established itself as a leading provider of integrated propulsion and electrical systems, supplying complete propulsion solutions to the global marine industry. The company has experienced strong growth in recent years and has built a profitable position within its core markets.
“This acquisition is central in our growth plan and strengthens our ability to serve a broader range of customers and vessel segments. Berg Propulsion complements our portfolio in a highly attractive way, and together we will deliver greater value through a wider offering, stronger lifecycle support, and shared expertise.”
– Per Håvard Siljan Hjukse, EVP Propulsion & Power. Handling at Kongsberg Maritime.
The transaction will bring together two businesses with complementary market strengths. Kongsberg Maritime has an established presence in high-performance and high-value vessel segments, while Berg Propulsion has developed a strong reputation in volume markets, including general cargo vessels and product tankers. The combination is expected to create a broader propulsion offering while enhancing support throughout the lifecycle of customers’ vessels.
“Joining forces with Kongsberg Maritime is an exciting opportunity for Berg Propulsion. Our businesses complement each other well, and together we can create new opportunities for our customers and employees. We look forward to contributing our strengths while also benefiting from Kongsberg Maritime’s global scale and aftermarket capabilities.”
– Philip Chaabane, CEO of Berg Propulsion.
Once the acquisition has been completed, Berg Propulsion will continue to operate as a standalone business unit and retain its own brand within Kongsberg Maritime’s Propulsion & Handling division. The structure is intended to preserve the company’s culture, agility and close customer relationships while allowing it to benefit from the wider group’s global resources and expertise.
“We look forward to learning from Berg’s culture and speed while leveraging our global capabilities to support their continued growth.”
– Per Håvard Siljan Hjukse.
The acquisition is also expected to create opportunities within the aftermarket sector, with Berg Propulsion’s installed base and future deliveries able to access Kongsberg Maritime’s global service network. At the same time, Kongsberg Maritime is set to benefit from Berg Propulsion’s entrepreneurial approach, efficient operations and fast decision-making, while Berg Propulsion gains access to a larger international organisation with extensive systems expertise and support capabilities.
Together, the companies will offer an expanded propulsion portfolio covering controllable pitch propellers, thrusters, hybrid and electric propulsion systems, as well as integrated vessel control solutions. The combined range is expected to be one of the most comprehensive in the commercial marine sector, supporting everything from standard commercial vessels through to more advanced applications.
Financially, Berg Propulsion reported revenues of approximately €160 million in 2025, reflecting the company’s sustained growth in recent years. During the same period, Kongsberg Maritime, as part of the Kongsberg Group, generated revenues of NOK 27.123 billion, representing growth of 10 per cent compared with 2024.
