Naples International Airport is set to undergo a major infrastructure upgrade throughout November, with a month-long closure planned to facilitate extensive refurbishment of its runway and taxiways. The €30 million investment will focus on enhancing the airport’s safety, reliability and long-term operational performance, while a temporary expansion of services at Salerno Costa d’Amalfi e del Cilento Airport will help maintain connectivity across the region.
The closure forms part of the extraordinary maintenance programme required under aviation regulations and reflects GESAC’s ongoing commitment to upholding the highest standards of operational safety. The extensive works will be undertaken by ADR Infrastrutture, a leading infrastructure specialist appointed following a competitive tender process, with activity continuing around the clock, seven days a week.
Spanning approximately 250,000 m², the project will involve around 500 personnel and the complete reconstruction of the runway pavement. Existing surface layers will be removed and replaced with new materials, including high-performance modified bitumen, designed to provide improved structural strength and durability. In a further effort to minimise the environmental and logistical impact of the project, some demolition materials will be temporarily repurposed to construct noise barriers, helping to provide acoustic protection for surrounding areas.
Alongside the runway and taxiway refurbishment, the project will include the replacement and modernisation of the airport’s airfield ground lighting (AGL) infrastructure. The upgraded systems will provide essential visual guidance for aircraft during take-off, landing and ground movements, including in conditions of reduced visibility.
During the closure, a number of services normally operating from Naples will be relocated to Salerno Costa d’Amalfi e del Cilento Airport, which is expected to serve 15 domestic and international destinations throughout November. The temporary programme will include six domestic routes: Bergamo with Ryanair, Milan Malpensa with easyJet, Milan Linate with Aeroitalia and ITA Airways, and Genoa, Turin and Trieste with Aeroitalia.
International connectivity will also be maintained through nine destinations, including Amsterdam with Transavia, Barcelona with Vueling, Casablanca with Air Arabia Maroc, Dubai with Flydubai, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart with Eurowings, Madrid with Iberia, Paris with Transavia France, and Sharm el-Sheikh with Air Cairo and Neos.
To support the additional passenger volumes, both the Commercial Aviation Terminal and the recently inaugurated General Aviation Terminal at Salerno Airport will be in operation. The General Aviation Terminal will accommodate commercial services to the non-Schengen destinations of Casablanca, Dubai and Sharm el-Sheikh, as well as the Madrid route, which is particularly significant for passengers travelling onwards to South America.
A range of additional ground transport options will also be available to facilitate travel between the two cities and their airports. Special bus services connecting Naples Piazza Garibaldi with Salerno Airport will operate throughout November, alongside increased services to Salerno railway station. Existing connections to Potenza, Eboli, Battipaglia and the Amalfi Coast will continue as normal.
Passengers will also benefit from the introduction of a pilot shared taxi service offering fixed fares on two routes: between Salerno Airport and Naples Central railway station and between Salerno Airport and Salerno Central railway station.
The coordinated infrastructure investment and temporary operational arrangements are intended to maintain regional air connectivity while enabling Naples Airport to undertake a significant upgrade of its core airfield infrastructure, supporting safer and more reliable operations for years to come.
