CMA CGM, a global leader in maritime, land, air, and logistics solutions, is set to introduce a ground breaking zero-emissions inland transport solution in Vietnam. The project features a 100% electric barge powered by green electricity, alongside dedicated charging infrastructure supported by a new solar farm at Gemalink Terminal in Cai Mep (25% owned by the CMA CGM Group).
The electric barge will operate on a 180 km return route between Binh Duong Province and the deep-sea Gemalink terminal, emitting zero greenhouse gases. This innovative solution is expected to reduce 778 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually by operating solely on electric batteries.
Co-designed by CMA CGM’s New Build and R&D teams in collaboration with CATL for advanced battery technology, the e-barge will be powered by 100% certified renewable electricity and is projected to handle over 50,000 TEUs per year.
NIKE has committed to leveraging the e-barge for its shipments between Binh Duong Province and Gemalink, further optimising this sustainable solution.
The e-barge is slated to begin operations in 2026, marking a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions and advancing green logistics in the region.
“It has been a great achievement to design and promote this project with NIKE’s partnership for commitment of usage in Vietnam waterways but can be replicated easily in other geographies and with other major customers. We are looking forward to duplicating and adapting this innovative solution with other cargo owners wishing to find solutions towards more sustainable transport modes.”
Christine Cabau-Woehrel, Executive Vice President Assets and Operations at CMA CGM.
A new dedicated solar farm at Gemalink Terminal will produce 1 GWh of green electricity annually to power CMA CGM’s innovative electric barge. The e-barge, a charging station, and the solar farm are all part of this scalable solution, which, when combined, creates a progressive paradigm that supports Vietnam’s goals for Net Zero 2050 and is replicable in other countries.
CMA CGM is spearheading the shift to sustainable inland waterway transport and greener terminal infrastructure. Through its partnership with NIKE, the e-barge not only delivers innovative logistics solutions but also contributes to the local economy, setting a new standard for green transport and logistics globally.
The construction of the solar farm will drive responsible economic development by creating local jobs and supporting territorial growth in the region. This project further strengthens Vietnam’s position as a leader in renewable energy and sustainable logistics within Southeast Asia.
With a strong presence in Vietnam since 1989, the CMA CGM Group currently operates 5 offices in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Haiphong, Danang, and Quy Nhon, employing over 550 people. The group connects Vietnam to global markets with 29 weekly mainline services across 7 ports, complemented by a robust intermodal network through CEVA Logistics.
