Rivertrace, a long-established specialist in oil-in-water quality monitoring, has partnered with software platform Viam to modernise and automate environmental compliance processes aboard commercial maritime vessels. The collaboration supports Rivertrace’s ongoing efforts to help operators meet increasingly stringent international regulations while improving accuracy and operational efficiency.
For more than four decades, Rivertrace has supplied monitoring systems that measure oil content in water discharge across the marine, offshore and industrial sectors. These systems play a critical role in ensuring vessels remain within regulatory limits designed to protect the marine environment. Traditionally, key compliance data generated by onboard monitors, including oil concentration levels, discharge flow rates and vessel position, has been logged manually. By integrating Viam’s digital platform, Rivertrace can now enable automated, real-time data capture, significantly reducing compliance risk for vessel operators.
“Rivertrace has been a true leader in maritime environmental compliance monitoring for over 40 years. The Viam platform brings new levels of accuracy and compliance assurance to Rivertrace’s systems, directly benefiting fleet operators, the industry, and the planet.”
– Eliot Horowitz, Viam Founder and CEO.
International maritime rules require ships to maintain oil content in discharged water below set thresholds, typically 15 parts per million (ppm), with regulators continuing to tighten standards to better safeguard marine ecosystems. Rivertrace’s collaboration with Viam is designed to help operators respond to these evolving requirements without adding complexity to day-to-day vessel operations. The technological advancement achieved through the partnership was recognised in a patent application, Marine Data Recording Apparatus and Method, published by the UK Intellectual Property Office on October 1, 2025, reflecting its contribution to the modernisation of maritime compliance technology.
“Working with Viam has given us a future proof solution. The partnership highlights the benefits of the digital ecosystem within marine, automating previously manual transactions. Compliance is a key objective for our customers. We look forward to implementing the solution, providing tangible value for our customers.”
– Martin Saunders, Rivertrace Managing Director.
Through the partnership, Rivertrace strengthens its offering by combining its proven monitoring expertise with advanced digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and automation. This approach supports more reliable compliance reporting, streamlined onboard workflows and improved environmental outcomes for vessel owners and operators worldwide.
Viam, founded in 2020 by former MongoDB co-founder and CTO Eliot Horowitz, provides a software platform that enables companies to enhance existing systems and develop new automated solutions. The company operates across multiple marine applications, including vessel automation, manufacturing and ocean conservation initiatives, and continues to expand its presence in Europe and North America through partnerships with manufacturers and marine technology organisations.
