Nordic energy company Gasum will now supply Finnish shipping operator Wasaline exclusively with liquefied biogas (bio-LNG) for its flagship vessel Aurora Botnia. The ferry runs daily passenger and freight services across the Baltic Sea between Vaasa, Finland, and Umeå, Sweden.
This full transition to renewable fuel has been made possible through an arrangement that enables Wasaline to generate FuelEU Maritime compliance on behalf of leading European ferry operator Stena Line, which operates 40 vessels across 20 routes in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
“We have constantly worked with the possibilities to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and environmental footprint, and we have seen the EU regulation as an opportunity for our traffic between Finland and Sweden. With this unique collaboration with Stena Line and Gasum, Wasaline can achieve carbon neutrality already now as a forerunner for the industry. This also means that all cargo and passengers travelling with Wasaline are carbon neutral with no additional charges.”
Peter Ståhlberg, Managing Director of Wasaline.
“We are very delighted that Wasaline has chosen Gasum to deliver them biogas for the daily operations of Aurora Botnia, and we are proud to facilitate this collaboration with Stena Line. Renewable biogas is one of the already available concrete solutions for reducing emissions in maritime transport. Our goal is to continuously increase biogas availability to our customers in the years ahead.”
Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime at Gasum.
Gasum’s bio-LNG is produced entirely from renewable raw materials, including biowaste, sewage sludge, manure, and other industrial and agricultural by-products. Over its life cycle, the fuel delivers an average greenhouse gas reduction of around 90% compared to conventional fossil fuels.
With maritime regulations tightening and demand for sustainable solutions increasing, Gasum is expanding both its own production capacity and its partnerships with certified biogas producers across Europe. Bio-LNG is fully interchangeable with LNG, meaning vessels equipped for LNG can run on either fuel, or any blend of the two, without modifications.
Gasum also offers a FuelEU Maritime pooling service, which enables shipowners to secure compliance cost-effectively. By operating specific vessels on 100% bio-LNG, Gasum generates compliance credits that can be shared across the pool to cover other ships in the fleet.
