90% of Scotland’s electricity demand is provided by renewables

Official figures show that Scotland have generated enough renewable electricity to charge almost 6.7 billion mobile phones for a year.

Scotland has generated enough electricity from renewable sources in 2019 to meet 90% of the equivalent of the country’s total electricity demand.

Paul Wheelhouse, Scotland’s Energy Minister said “this year’s Energy Statement shows that we are continuing to make progress towards building a greener, fairer and more equal society and economy.”

Scotland generated 30.5TWh of electricity from renewable sources in 2019 equivalent to boiling approximately 700 billion kettles.

The Annual Energy Statement 2020 said that Scotland’s heat demand is still primarily made up from fossil fuels but progress on renewables has been made, with the amount of renewable heat generated in 2019 up 4.8% on the previous year.

Scotland’s target is for 100% of their gross electricity consumption to be generated from renewable sources by 2020.

“This success remains built on the strong foundation represented by Scotland’s long-established hydro resource, as well as the huge strides over the past two decades in the development of onshore and, more recently, offshore wind.”

Scotland generated 5.2TWh of renewable heat in 2019, equivalent to:

  • Gas use of every building in Glasgow City
  • Heating all educational establishments for roughly 2 years

“With some of the world’s most challenging climate change targets, much work still to do on removing the carbon from heating and the UN’s COP26 climate conference coming to Glasgow in 2021, we look forward to working with governments in London and Edinburgh to build on these figures to show Scotland can truly lead the world in renewable energy.”
