A groundbreaking sustainability project in partnership with the Barcelona Port Authority has been announced by MB92 Group, a leading superyacht refit, repair, and maintenance company with facilities in Spain and France, and Pinmar, a renowned superyacht service and supply group, part of GYG Ltd.
The recycling of all waste plastic produced during refit projects at the facilities of MB92 Group and other Pinmar facilities will be managed by a state-of-the-art 200m2 plastic recycling centre that has been commissioned in the Port of Barcelona. The facility, which is being funded by an investment by the MB92 Group and has additional assistance from Pinmar, will have a modular system from KITECH recycling solutions, enabling it to process more than 100 tonnes of waste plastic annually.
This development is the outcome of a year-long, thorough research project. Under the direction of MB92 Group and Pinmar, and in close collaboration with top recycling consultants, material specialists, and equipment manufacturers, the goal was to identify the most environmentally friendly approach to maintaining the high standards needed for refit projects while lowering the total amount of plastic waste generated by both businesses.
Previously, any plastic used during a retrofit was considered unsuitable for recycling due to paint contamination. Nonetheless, the most recent technological developments in recycling equipment enable safe, non-chemical, waterless, and environmentally friendly plastic decontamination using physical manipulation and infrared filtering. The equipment produces flakes of shredded plastic that can be recycled into materials for a variety of industrial applications.
With the opening of the new recycling centre, Pinmar and MB92 will be able to significantly reduce the carbon footprint used in trash processing, which will be another major step towards achieving their sustainability goals.
“We have focused a lot of attention on waste management over the last few years and have made real progress in areas such as waste classification, as well as identifying ways to extend the life of materials. For example, we have implemented a methodology to identify plastic protection for re-use, reducing consumption. We are also working closely with local circular economy projects at both sites to upcycle and give new life to certain materials. This recycling centre initiative is another example of how collaboration can lead to positive solutions. We are excited to see how it performs and look forward to sharing results and details of an ambitious second stage of the project.”
Marc Hervás, MB92 Group Sustainability Manager.
“I am extremely excited by this important initiative, we carried out extensive research to explore the different materials and options available to replace plastic tenting, and the results were very conclusive. When treated properly, plastic is a highly efficient material which can be used multiple times and provides the performance and safety characteristics required for the important superyacht refit projects MB92 and Pinmar undertake. Having full visibility and control of the plastic lifecycle from beginning to end is key and provides transparency and accountability throughout the recycling process.”
