The Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) organised and completed a mangrove planting and beach clean up at Ma’ameer, Bahrain. The planting and clean up was attended by 200 Bapco Energies employees, their families and representatives from the Supreme Council of Environment, Southern Municipality, and the Ministry of Municipality Affairs and Agriculture.
Participants of the activity planted 2,350 new mangrove seedlings and removed approximately 5,000 kilograms of general waste from the beach. The initiative reflects Bapco Energies’ ongoing efforts to create a cleaner and greener future for the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Bapco Modernisation Programme
Bapco has built a legacy of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. Over the last two decades, they have invested more than USD 320 million into technology to ensure compliance with local regulations and international standards for land, air and water.
The Bapco Modernisation Programme (BMP) is designed to meet and exceed local and international regulations on environmental footprints, with more than 50 environmental and social studies and plans completed. The facilities and units hosting the BMP have all been designed to be in full compliance with Bahraini legislation and in line with the international IFC requirements and Equator Principle guidelines. The refinery’s Energy Efficiency Index, sulphur dioxide (SO2) and Nitrous Oxide (NOx) emissions and treated wastewater discharged to the sea reduce significantly despite the refinery throughput increase.
The project will rehabilitate the soil and improve its quality, support biodiversity through the further plantation of mangroves (a programme that began in 2018) and ensure limited noise impact during both the construction and operation phases.
The initiative, organised by Bapco Energies, aligns with the Kingdom’s ambitious National Afforestation Plan to double the number of trees and quadruple mangrove coverage by 2035 across the Kingdom.
