In a ceremony held at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea, “Ane Maersk” was named the world’s first large methanol-enabled container vessel. The ship bears the name of Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, who serves as the chair of both A.P. Moller Holding and the A.P. Moller Foundation. As godmother, Ane’s eldest granddaughter broke a champagne bottle over the bow to christen the ship.
The first of Maersk’s eighteen huge methanol-enabled vessels, “Ane Maersk,” is scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025. It is the second container ship with methanol capability in the world. It will go into operation on the AE7 string, which connects Asia and Europe, at the beginning of February, which is a big step forward for the company’s objective to lead the way in developing low-emission shipping solutions. With the bridge and accommodations positioned right in front of the ship, the new series of vessels boasts an industry-first unique design that guarantees fuel-efficient operations.
“This series of vessels will have a transformative impact on our ambition to progress on our industry-leading climate ambitions. It is a visual and operational proof of our commitment to a more sustainable industry. With “Ane Mærsk” and her sister vessels we are expanding our offer to the growing number of businesses aiming to reduce emissions from their supply chains.”
