All Nippon Airways (ANA), the biggest and five-star airline in Japan for 12 years running, has debuted “THE Room FX” on Safran’s exhibit at the 55th International Paris Airshow. With a privacy door for every seat, this next-generation business class seat on the Boeing 787-9 aircraft is the biggest seat in its class on a mid-sized aircraft in the world.
Building on the success and design concepts of the larger Boeing 777-300ER “THE Room” seat, “THE Room FX,” created in collaboration with French leading aviation seat manufacturer Safran Seats and British design firm Acumen, provides an unparalleled client experience.
“ANA is dedicated to providing the highest level of a customer experience and is investing in the future of the most advanced and comfortable travel with the new ‘THE Room FX’ seat. This seat represents our commitment to exceeding expectations and shaping the future of luxury flight.”
– Tomoji Ishii, Executive Vice President, Customer Experience of ANA.
“THE Room FX” private seats will be progressively added by ANA on major long-haul international routes starting in 2026. In addition to the existing “THE Room” seats, this rollout provides the maximum amount of comfort and room for passengers.
“At Safran Seats, we are proud to deepen our long-standing partnership with ANA through the launch of ‘THE Room FX’. This new business class seat represents a step-change in comfort, versatility, and innovative design for the Boeing 787-9. By combining our engineering expertise with ANA’s commitment to passenger excellence and Acumen’s creative vision, we are setting new benchmarks in the world of premium air travel.”
Victoria Foy, President & CEO of Safran Seats.
“‘THE Room FX’ project is a result of a profound long-standing partnership between ANA, Acumen and Safran – shaped by years of trust, creativity and innovation. Building on the success and DNA of the ‘The Room’ B777, this next-generation suite elevates the flying experience with a rare balance of comfort, flexibility and elegant engineering. This is a refreshingly original and market leading Business Class product that we believe will exceed passengers’ expectations for many years to come.”
Ian Dryburgh, CEO and Founder of Acumen.
FX, short for “Future Experience,” represents a reimagined and adaptable approach to passenger comfort. This innovative design introduces a streamlined mechanism that enhances passenger relaxation with new lounging options, expanded storage on a generous side console, and a spacious, class-leading bed setup that brings a new level of luxury to air travel.

Drawing from the success of “THE Room,” ANA’s acclaimed business class seat debuted on the Boeing 777-300ER in 2019, this new concept marks the next evolution in premium seating. Designed specifically for mid-sized aircraft, ANA partnered with Acumen and Safran Seats over several years to bring this unique product from idea to execution. The result is a bespoke seat created exclusively for ANA, offering a distinctive and modern flying experience.
To maximize in-flight comfort, the cabin layout has been intelligently redesigned with a combination of space-saving innovations. A slimmer privacy door and partition walls, gently curved backrests, and a staggered seating arrangement (alternating forward and rear-facing seats) work together to enhance the spacious feel. This clever use of the Boeing 787’s interior creates an environment that rivals the comfort of larger aircraft.

The seating itself has undergone major functional enhancements. It’s significantly wider than ANA’s current Boeing 787-9 business class seat and includes a pre-reclined design that mimics the feel of a home sofa, allowing travelers to relax in multiple lounging positions. Passengers can further personalize their space with adjustable leg rests that convert the seat into a full flatbed. Additional improvements include a monitor that’s 1.4 times larger, extensive storage options, USB-C and wireless charging ports, and Bluetooth-enabled audio, ensuring both comfort and convenience.
Despite offering a generous and private seating area, the updated materials, such as thinner seat dividers and backrests, contribute to reduced seat weight. This ensures that the new seats maintain comparable weight to ANA’s existing business class seats on the 787-9, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to sustainability without compromising luxury.
