The joint venture of China’s COSCO Shipping LNG Investment (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. (CSLNG) and Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K Lines Ltd. (MOL) has been chosen by QatarEnergy to own and operate six QC-Max size LNG tankers.
Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group, a division of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), will construct the six vessels in China. These are the final collection of 128 LNG ships in QatarEnergy’s historic shipbuilding program, which consists of 24 ultra-modern QC-Max-sized boats and 104 ordinary ships.
Under the patronage of His Excellency Mr Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, QatarEnergy President and CEO, the shipowners received their long-term Time Charter Party (TCP) agreements during an exclusive ceremony conducted at the company’s Doha headquarters. Mr. Takeshi Hashimoto, the President and Chief Executive Officer of MOL, and Mr. Zhang Feng, the Vice President of China COSCO Shipping Corporation, the parent company of CSLNG, participated in the ceremony alongside senior executives from QatarEnergy and QatarEnergy LNG, as well as shipowners.
“This is the last batch of long-term shipowner contracts in our 128-vessel strong historic shipbuilding program that will cater for QatarEnergy’s future LNG fleet requirements for our LNG expansion projects, as well as the replacement requirements of some of our existing fleet.”
His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi.
“We are proud to have forged very important partnerships and business relations with many companies and joint ventures including today’s new partnership with MOL and COSCO Shipping.”
His Excellency Minister Al-Kaab.
As part of QatarEnergy’s LNG fleet development program, the MOL-CSLNG joint venture has previously signed long-term TCP agreements with the company for seven conventional LNG vessels, which were completed in 2022. This gives the joint venture a total of 13 long-term TCPs.
