An agreement has been achieved between Oldendorff and Norsepower to significantly cut CO2 emissions on a modern bulk carrier by utilising Norsepower Rotor Sails™. By mid-2024, the ship Dietrich Oldendorff (IMO 9860350) will be equipped with three 24 x 4m Norsepower Rotor Sails™. It is contracted to operate on a trade route that runs across the North Pacific to Asia.
An entirely modernised, digital era of the Flettner rotor is the Norsepower Rotor Sail™. The cylinder-shaped rotors on the ship’s deck are actively rotated with very little electric power consumption. Rotation and wind combine to compress the air behind the sail and provide strong propulsion, which conserves fuel and lowers pollutants. About 342,000 plastic bottles are used in the construction of the large, rotating rotors.
The product has been in operation for almost a decade now, with over 310,000 hours of operation on ships run by some of the biggest shipping companies and charterers worldwide. To date, it has reduced CO2 emissions by over 21,000 tonnes. In Q2 of 2024, the Dietrich Oldendorff will have the sails installed.
Green shipping embodies Oldendorff’s partnership with Norsepower. Renowned businesses strive to provide new and innovative products that preserve the planet for future generations. This kind of large step is impossible for any one company to accomplish on its own; both sizable, highly experienced fleets and the most recent technological advancements are required.
“We are extremely excited about reducing fuel consumption and emissions by harnessing the power of the wind with Norsepower Rotor Sails™, a proven energy-saving product.”
Torsten Barenthin, Director of Research & Development at Oldendorff.
“Oldendorff is a dream customer for Norsepower in more than one way: a family-owned, legendary, company with over 100 years operating in the industry and around 700 vessels on the water today. Oldendorff is making green shipping a reality today and is the best partner we could have on our journey towards the zero-carbon industry. I wholeheartedly welcome Oldendorff’s commitment to Norsepower’s mission of decarbonizing shipping and look forward to the next possibilities for cooperation!”
