The foundation of Sanlorenzo and Volvo Penta’s partnership is innovation and sustainability. This collaboration highlights Sanlorenzo’s dedication to the ESG targets once more. The first pillar of the 2023–25 Industrial Plan is the development of new technologies for carbon neutral power generation. The group works towards this with the cooperation from the top energy and E–fuel companies in the world, with the ultimate goal of revolutionising the marine industry as a whole.
Ensuring the “Road to 2030” strategy, Sanlorenzo aims to launch in 2024 the first 50 Steel equipped with a modular Reformer Fuel Cell system, which can convert green methanol into hydrogen and then into electricity to power all hotellerie equipment without storing the hydrogen on board. This will result in the launch of the first superyacht powered entirely by green methanol by the end of the decade, providing an authentic solution to the marine industry’s need for carbon-neutral power generation.
This will be made possible by increasing partnerships with companies like Volvo Penta that support the environmental aims of the marine sector, as well as by continuing to engage in innovation and adopt cutting-edge technology solutions.
The two brands began working together when the SX88 was introduced. It was the initial model of a range that would eventually include smaller and larger versions in a whole series. This was an appealing and intelligent combination of the traditional motor yacht with flying bridge, of which Sanlorenzo was and still is one of the world’s pioneers. Volvo IPS1050 engines were fitted in SX88.
At Düsseldorf 2024, Volvo Penta introduced the ground-breaking IPS Professional Platform, which builds on the ground-breaking success of the Volvo Penta IPS and features increased efficiency, a longer cruising range, a higher top speed, and quicker acceleration. The efficiency-based system’s technical features facilitate installation on superyachts ranging in length from 25 to over 55 metres, with maximum speeds of 12 to 40 knots. Its purpose is to optimise fuel usage and minimise emissions.
The agreement represents a significant step towards the yachting industry’s zero-impact. Sanlorenzo chose to present the two new models—Sanlorenzo SX120, whose launch is anticipated in 2025, and SX132, whose launch is anticipated in 2027—on the yacht side of the Blue Innovation Dock in Düsseldorf as a world premiere, signifying the strategic importance that defines this partnership.
The Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform, which effortlessly integrates into Sanlorenzo’s innovative yacht design, is a first for the yachting industry and a prime example of cutting edge engineering. From the helm to the propellers, the platform represents the most recent development in Volvo Penta’s fully integrated experience. Designed to utilise a variety of energy sources simultaneously, from hybrid or fully electric solutions to combustion engines running on renewable fuels, it guarantees increased efficiency by adjusting energy consumption in real time in response to cruising demands.
Due to the compact size of the Volvo Penta platform, the two Sanlorenzo SX models will have unparalleled space flexibility: the layout’s main advantage will allow the owner to design the aft cockpit area as they see appropriate.
These two innovations are the culmination of Sanlorenzo and Volvo Penta’s fruitful cooperation, which strives to combine resources in an effort to lessen the marine industry’s negative environmental effects.
