A new river cruise concept designed to blur the lines between luxury yachting, boutique hospitality and traditional river cruising has been revealed by cruise design studio TDoS (Tillberg Design of Sweden), part of the Viken Group, in partnership with Transcend Cruises.

The 135-metre vessel has been conceived as a purpose-built platform for meetings, private charters and premium group travel, introducing what is being described as the first yacht-inspired river cruise product of its kind. Developed to accommodate up to 120 guests, the ship combines a highly personalised service model with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the river cruise sector, employing 54 crew members.

“We weren’t simply designing beautiful interiors – we were helping define an entirely new product category.”

– Anna Silvesjö, Chief Executive Officer at Viken Group.

The vessel’s accommodation offering includes 60 spacious staterooms spread primarily across two guest decks. Flexibility has been built into the design, allowing cabins to be interconnected and converted into as many as 30 larger two-room suites when required. This adaptability reflects the wider philosophy behind the project, which has focused on creating spaces capable of supporting a variety of guest experiences and event formats.

Among the ship’s most distinctive features is the Forum, a two-level amphitheatre-style venue designed to host everything from business presentations and destination briefings to celebrations and live performances. The space serves as a central gathering point and demonstrates how the ship’s architecture, technology and operational planning have been integrated to maximise versatility.

A broad range of leisure and social spaces has also been incorporated throughout the vessel. Guests will have access to multiple lounges, private salons, a library, a barista bar, chef’s table experiences, a wine vault and dedicated dining venues. The top deck has been designed as an outdoor retreat, complete with a lounge area, grill, cinema screen, walking track and yoga space.

Wellness has been given equal prominence within the overall design. Facilities include a spa, fitness studio, sauna overlooking the river and additional areas dedicated to yoga and relaxation.

Rather than drawing inspiration from conventional cruise ship interiors, the design team looked to contemporary yachts and high-end residential hospitality for guidance. Natural wood finishes, textured stone surfaces, soft furnishings and warm metallic details have been combined to create an atmosphere intended to feel both refined and welcoming.

Material selection was driven not only by aesthetics but also by operational considerations, with durability, ease of maintenance and longevity all playing an important role. Large windows throughout the ship allow natural light to flood the interiors, while also ensuring constant visual connections with the surrounding landscape.

“Our ambition was to create an environment that immediately feels welcoming, spacious and connected to its surroundings. Rather than creating the feeling of being inside a ship, we wanted guests to feel as though they were moving through a contemporary boutique hotel or private yacht that just happens to travel along Europe’s rivers.”

“This was achieved through generous sightlines, layered lighting, carefully choreographed transitions between spaces and a strong visual connection to the outside environment. The residential character of the interiors helps guests relax, while integrated technology subtly adapts each space to the needs of different events and charter programmes.”

– Anna Silvesjö.

Designing for a river environment presented a different set of challenges compared with the ocean-going cruise ships and yachts typically created by TDoS. Restricted dimensions meant every area needed to serve multiple purposes while still maintaining a sense of openness and comfort.

To overcome these limitations, the design incorporates double-height spaces, extensive glazing and carefully planned sightlines, creating a feeling of spaciousness that exceeds expectations for a vessel of its size. Flexibility was another central consideration, with public venues and accommodation designed to evolve according to operational requirements. Dining spaces can be repurposed for events, lounges can become presentation venues and guest accommodation can be reconfigured to suit different charter groups.

This level of adaptability required close collaboration between design, technology and operational teams throughout the development process, ensuring flexibility was embedded into the vessel’s architecture from the outset.

“From the start, Transcend was a concept never before attempted in the river cruise space. We sought a design partner who could design and deliver a ship completely different from anything else on the rivers today, and we found that partner in Tillberg. They took our primary brand pillar of customisation and flexibility and brought it to life in a design concept that is stunningly beautiful and flexible to meet today’s varying needs of group and charter clients from around the world.”

– Kimberly Daley, Chief Operating Officer at Transcend Cruises.

Sustainability has also been incorporated as a key element of the vessel’s design and operation. The ship is powered by low-emission EU Stage V engines and is capable of service speeds of up to 14 knots. Additional environmental features include an electric thruster system that enables emission-free close-range manoeuvring, battery-assisted peak shaving technology, food waste reduction systems and a focus on local sourcing and sustainable onboard products.

“Sustainability was a requirement from day one, not an afterthought. Our clients expect it, and this vessel delivers it in how it is powered, provisioned and operated.”

– Kimberly Daley.

For the design team, the project’s success will ultimately be measured not by the complexity of the engineering and planning involved, but by how naturally guests experience life on board.

“For us, luxury is not defined by excess. It comes from how effortlessly a space works and how comfortable it feels. When guests experience the ship, we don’t necessarily want them to notice the complexity. We want them to feel that everything simply works naturally around them. The greatest compliment is when guests simply experience beautiful spaces, without realising how many different ways those spaces can operate.”

– Anna Silvesjö.
