Wärtsilä has announced plans to invest approximately EUR 90 million in expanding production capabilities at its Sustainable Technology Hub (STH) in Vaasa, Finland, alongside strengthening capacity within its global supply chain network. The move represents a further 30% increase in technical production capacity and follows an earlier expansion programme unveiled in February 2026.
Combined with the previously announced 35% capacity increase, the latest investment will bring Wärtsilä’s total planned production growth to 65% above its 2025 technical production levels. The company said the expansion is intended to support rising demand across both the energy and marine sectors while enhancing its ability to meet customer requirements and support future business development.
According to Wärtsilä, the first phase of the expansion programme, announced earlier this year, is scheduled to become operational during the first quarter of 2028. The newly announced increase in capacity is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2029.
“Demand in the energy and marine markets continues to develop positively, driven by rising electricity consumption and rapid data-centre growth in energy and by decarbonisation regulation and the need for fuel efficiency and fuel flexibility in marine. Our customers turn to us for flexible and energy-efficient engine technologies to address their evolving power requirements. Our engines are recognised as a competitive technology for the future. This investment strengthens our ability to respond to the increasing demand, support our customers’ requirements and reinforce Wärtsilä’s long-term market position while enhancing our global supply chain. It is an important step on our journey to shape the decarbonisation of marine and energy.”
– Håkan Agnevall, President and CEO of Wärtsilä.
The Sustainable Technology Hub, which opened in 2022, has become a central part of Wärtsilä’s operations and innovation activities. Located in Vaasa, the 90,000-square-metre facility employs more than 3,800 people and serves as a collaborative environment for customers, technology partners, academic organisations and Wärtsilä specialists. The site welcomes around 1,000 visitors each month, including industry stakeholders and decision-makers.
The hub is responsible for manufacturing all engine types within Wärtsilä’s portfolio and also houses a dedicated training facility and one of the company’s global remote monitoring centres. As part of the latest expansion plans, an extension covering more than 11,000 square metres is expected to be completed in early 2028 to accommodate the additional production capacity.
Since first revealing plans for the Sustainable Technology Hub in 2018, Wärtsilä has committed more than EUR 490 million to the development of the site. This figure includes a EUR 50 million investment announced in April 2025 to enhance research and development testing facilities, an office expansion completed in early 2026, and a combined EUR 230 million allocated during 2026 towards increasing production capacity and strengthening the related global supply chain.
The facility also plays a significant role in Wärtsilä’s sustainability strategy and its target of achieving carbon neutrality across its own operations by 2030. Designed with energy self-sufficiency in mind, the hub generates its own electricity and heat. Surplus electricity is fed back into the grid, while heat recovered from engine testing and other operational processes is stored and reused to warm the building.
