A new strategic partnership between Kalmar and APM Terminals is set to accelerate the development of next-generation terminal automation technology, with the two companies combining their expertise to enhance the efficiency, resilience and safety of automated terminal operations.
The collaboration brings together Kalmar’s automation technology and equipment capabilities with APM Terminals’ operational experience to jointly shape the future of terminal automation. As part of the agreement, the organisations will work together on the continued development of the Kalmar One automation platform while also aligning future product development with the evolving requirements of automated container terminals.
One of the key objectives of the partnership is to co-develop and deploy enhancements to the Kalmar One solution. Both companies will collaborate closely on software development, ensuring that new capabilities can be implemented across both existing and future terminal operations. In parallel, APM Terminals’ operational expertise will help influence the future direction of the platform, supporting the creation of automation solutions that are better aligned with real-world terminal requirements.
The agreement also includes the development of an Automation as a Service approach, creating long-term value for both organisations while supporting more streamlined and scalable automation across terminal operations.
APM Terminals already operates the Kalmar One system at its Pier 400 facility in Los Angeles, California, the largest container terminal in the Western Hemisphere, providing an established foundation for the continued collaboration.
